26 Nov Nuqta Exhibition
Nuqta: End of the Line was a three-week exhibition held at VCUarts Qatar from November 23 to December 12, 2019. The show featured speculative design work created in the Co-Lab Studio course I adore(!) co-teaching with Basma Hamdy. In this iteration of our collaboration, we brought together students enrolled in the elective courses Future Realities + Design Activism to examine power and resistance positions. Our students worked together in small teams using world-building and design fiction to imagine future scenarios — environmentally, socially, and economically.
Along with our Teaching Assistant, Faheem Khan—students developed future scenarios and created speculative artifacts to represent their imagined dystopian or utopian worlds. Students worked together in the fabrication lab, photography studio, and exhibition space to create dynamic and believable objects that enabled them to begin conversations about preventing or supporting these future scenarios. In doing so, each student investigated how design propositions can trace the path to alternative worlds to empower, convince, challenge, and inspire audiences.
The exhibition opening was a fantastic success, and we are so proud of the work our students produced. Thanks to everyone who stopped by and joined us—including alumnae, faculty, staff, students, and Diane von Furstenberg!
