08 Apr Multilingual Children’s Books
Illustrated stories are fast becoming a popular form of culture in the GCC Region and rich locally-sourced stories can make a valuable social and cultural contribution. Although Bloombury Qatar Foundation has produced a series of Arabic books that are a great start to a regional library, the breadth and depth of children’s books in the MENA Region remains limited. This project aims to add to the library while addressing the growing need for multilingual children’s books.
Encouraging bilingual and multilingual literacy for children in Qatar and throughout the MENA region is of paramount importance to language, cultural, and heritage conservation efforts. The goal of this project is to gather traditional and contemporary stories in English/Arabic, develop new narratives, illustrate the narratives, and design the individual books for children ages 1-10. The primary audience is young children, their parents/adults, and schools, with a potential distribution in museum bookshops, in local schools, and in the Apple iBookstore.
