Activist Futures and Speculative Design

Future design practices will be situated in an unpredictable world—technologically, environmentally, politically, and economically. The designer’s crucial task is thinking about what our future will look like and how we will interact with it. This project challenges students to reinterpret the past (and present) to inform a fictional or speculative future.

By creating unique future scenarios in response to current socio-cultural challenges, students use design to trace a path to alternative worlds. These predictive futures aim to expose assumptions and provoke action by considering what “change” is needed in a world. The result of these efforts is a group exhibition of the project outcomes, with each installation aimed at raising awareness about a chosen topic and sparking debate about our collective future(s).
