History Meets Design

A roundup of design related history starts now.

History of Typography

Check out this synopsis of the history of typography through a fun short paper-letter animation. It’s both entertaining and educational. In order to complete the animation, it took Ben Barrett-Forrest from Forrest Media 291 Paper Letters, 2,454 Photographs, and 140 hours of work. Now that’s dedication. Type meets history. History meets animation. What could be better?

History of the Internet

Great use of infographics in this animated documentary to help explain some of the complicated terms and ideas behind the “History of the Internet.” Learn about  time-sharing, filesharing, Arpanet, and the Internet. (Director, Animator, Design & Script – Melih Bilgil / Voice over – Steve Taylor / Music – Telekaster).

History of Design Tools

Interesting infographic on the visual history of computer-based design tools, on a timeline covering the last 27 years. Starting with MacPaint in 1984, passing by now obsolete applications such as Macromedia Freehand, xRes, and Adobe Pagemaker and ending up with some of the new kids on the block including Pixelmator, ArtRage and iDraw for the iPad. Did you notice how long Illustrator has been around for??

History of Advertising

Most commonly, the desired result is to drive consumer behavior with respect to a commercial offering, although political and ideological advertising is also common.
