27 Apr AIGA Spaces of Learning Conference

This April, the AIGA made history with the organization’s first ever Design Educators Conference coordinated outside the United States, in neighboring Canada. Held in Toronto on the beautiful York University campus, the three-day event had an excellent array of keynote speakers including Denise Gonzales Crisp, Carl DiSalvo, and Sanne van der Beek.

The AIGA Spaces of Learning conference questioned assumptions about the relationship between making design, thinking and asking questions about design, and theorizing design.

With a 30 percent acceptance rate via a blind peer review process, I was honored to present two papers at the conference. My presentations included: “Culture in a box: Reshaping community-based narratives into visual constructs” (with Basma Hamdy) and “Creating significant change through redirective practice” (with Kelly Murdoch–Kitt).
